Marine fuel expert Bill Stamatopoulos presents at GREEN4SEA Athens

Mar. 10 2020

Bureau Veritas’ marine fuel expert Bill Stamatopoulos recently presented at the GREEN4SEA Athens Forum held on March 4th 2020. The title of his presentation '2020 Fuels: The New Normal', the term meaning the new state after a dramatic change.

Key topics covered during Bill’s presentation included:

  • Teething issues related to the new Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oils (VLSFOs) and the variability in density, viscosity and cold flow properties requiring a proper on board fuel management.
  • Over limit sulphur values in November 2019 and January 2020 and the speed at which the market adapted to compliance.
  • The quality issues related to high sediments concerning unstable and dirty fuels, high pour point values as well as fuels with unusual odours which have resulted in crew member complaints.
  • The importance of representative sampling for both the MARPOL and the commercial samples. Latest ISO 13739:2020 standards suggest that sampling at the receiving vessel’s inlet bunker manifold for all samples will likely improve the sampling issue.
