Rotterdam Laboratory Expands Used Cooking Oil Capabilities
Mar. 17 2021
Bureau Veritas is committed to environmental protection and social responsibility. As such, we are proud to announce that our Rotterdam laboratory has extended its capability to carry out the testing for used cooking oils (UCO), by adding the wax test method ISO/TS 23647:2010 to its testing portfolio.
Our ISO 17025 accredited laboratory is now performing a gas chromatographic method for determining the wax content of crude, degummed, neutralized, winterized, and fully refined vegetable oils, such as sunflower, soybean, rapeseed and corn. Used cooking oils are set to significantly supply the manufacture of renewable diesel in the years ahead.
By definition waxes are esters of long chain fatty acids and fatty alcohols (having a C20 or longer saturated carbon chains). The wax content is expressed in milligrams per kilogram of oil.
To conduct the UCO analyses, it requires approximately 50 grams of sample material and results are provided within two working days.
Furthermore, this new initiative supports Bureau Veritas’ green line services and solutions, through our full commitment to sustainably and a greener planet.
"Bureau Veritas is providing the market with the most advanced technology in order to optimise efficiencies for both clients and society alike. We are taking a really positive step forward by playing a key part in the testing of UCOs; recycling is one of the most efficient ways to handle UCOs which reduces GHG emissions, carbon footprint and mitigates the risk of oils contaminating the environment."

By 2030 the agenda for sustainable development will come into force in the EU. The agenda is a commitment to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development, it demands the promotion of renewable energy within the electricity, heating & cooling, and transport sector industry. In light of this, used cooking oil will play an ever more critical role in contributing to the success of the agenda.
